The Arsenal defender was returning home from training in heavy rain and lost control of his car on the M1, hitting the central reservation in the process. It is understood that only Mertesacker was involved in the incident, with the car aquaplaning, but reports have suggested that the Germany international was left “shaken” by the incident.
Arsenal face Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday but Mertesacker is not expected to play, with Arsene Wenger revealing before the crash that he was not yet fit enough to feature.
“With Mertesacker, it was a serious condition and he is not ready today to play,” he told reporters.
“I believe by the end of the week he should be much better.”
Mertesacker may, however, return to the pitch in time for Arsenal’s clash with Chelsea this weekend.
