Facebook-owned Instagram has outed a new app today. It's called Boomerang and it's already available both in the iTunes App Store for iOS and the Google Play Store for Android.
Boomerang creates one-second looping videos with no sound. To use it, you find something that's moving (that's the whole point of it) and tap one big button. The app then quickly takes 10 photos and plays them forward and backward to make a looping Boomerang video.
After you have your video, you can share it to Instagram or Facebook, as well as to other apps on your phone. The videos are added to your Camera roll or Gallery. If you share a Boomerang on Instagram, you still get to use filters to edit it before you post it.
Basically, this is Instagram's take on the recent trend of short videos or animated photos - be they Vines, GIFs, or Apple's Live Photos.
