Post-phones Nokia is still looking for a new challenge and this July it introduced a new VR camera, the OZO. Yesterday, the camera became available for pre-order, though it's really, really not a consumer product – at least not the kind of consumer that doesn’t have $60,000 to spend on a VR camera.
No, there's no typo, there are five digits in the price. You have to pay a $5,000 deposit to pre-order too. Even the docking station is a whopping $1,500.
Okay, so it's clearly aimed at professionals and Nokia showed a demo of what the OZO can be used for. A concert on the roof of Capitol Records was livestreamed to attendees of the launch party, using a Samsung Gear VR and other headsets.
The Nokia OZO boasts a total of eight lenses, each in front of a 2K x 2K sensor. Those cover a 360° x 180° viewing angle and produce a 3D image at 30fps with a 10 stop dynamic range and base sensitivity of ISO 400. There are eight mics to capture multi-directional sound too with 64dB S/N and 120dB max SPL.
The camera records 8 channels of raw video and audio to a 500GB SSD. The final video can be composed at 8K x 4K resolution at 10-bit color depth. The camera has built-in Wi-Fi for wireless control, though that works only with OS X 10.10 Yosemite. The whole thing weighs 4.2kg (9.3lbs) with battery.
I think I'll stick with Google's Photo Spheres for now, them I can afford.

As the Nokia Lumia 2520 enjoys its fair share of attention, a report on the company’s second Windows RT tablet made the rounds. Allegedly, an 8” Windows RT slate dubbed Nokia Illusionist is in development.

Reportedly the Nokia Illusionist will be released in early 2014 with Qualcomm silicon on board. The slate will slot perfectly in the range between the 10” Nokia Lumia 2520 and the 6” Lumia 1520 Phablet.
Unsurprisingly, the upcoming 8” Lumia tablet will sport similar design to the 2520 (think a stretched Lumia smartphone). The device is said to sport a lower model number than the one of its larger relative.

The upcoming Nokia Lumia 2520 Windows RT tablet made yet another unscheduled appearance, thanks to @evleaks. After allowing us to potentially catch a glimpse of its kickstand three days ago, the slate leaked out in a press image, dressed in a cyan outfit.

Update: @evleaks posted another press image of the upcoming tablet, this time dressed in a red outfit. See it below.

The tablet in the leaked images sports a design which is in line with the looks of Nokia Lumia range of smartphones. Its rumored specs include Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC, 10.1” 1080p display, and LTE support.
Nokia Lumia 2520 is all but certain to be unveiled at the Nokia World event in Abu Dhabi on October 22. The tablet is rumored to be available in four colors – black, white, red, and the cyan from the image above.

Nokia has just published an awesome app that builds upon the popular Glance Screen feature. If the Glance screen was a bit too boring for your taste, you can now spice it up by adding a background to it.

Thanks to the Glance Background (still in beta), you can choose a set of backgrounds for your Glance Screen.
To use the Glance Background you have to turn on the Glance Screen first. It is available with the Amber update on Lumia 620, 720, 820, 920, 925 and 1020. There you’ll find a few pre-defined backgrounds, but you can add more from your gallery.

Once you select a custom picture you can apply color effects or you can just convert it to a single color. Not every picture is suitable for a background on the Glance Screen since it’s transformed into a low-quality 8-bit image in order to save battery.

Microsoft announced the Windows Phone 8 GDR3 update yesterday and many got excited over the news for the addition of a third column of Live Tiles on the Start screen. As it turns out, however, the third column will only be available for Windows Phone devices packing a display of full HD resolution.

As a result, all current WP8 smartphones, including the Lumia 1020 flagship, will be limited to a two-column Start menu only. Devices with lower resolution also follow suit.
The news was confirmed by Joe Belfiore, VP of the Windows Phone program at Microsoft so it’s as official as it gets. His tweet also mentions other UI changes that the GDR3 update brings specially for 1080p smartphones. The first one of them is expected to be the Nokia Lumia 1520, which is most likely todebut at the Nokia event in Abu Dabu on October 22.
The Windows Phone 8 GDR3 update rollout will commence in the coming weeks and will continue over several months. Microsoft can’t give specific timing as it depends on the user’s carrier and phone model.
